'Meg 2: The Trench' Devours $142 Million at the Worldwide Box Office in Debut Weekend

Back in 2018, The Meg was a big time success at the box office, debuting to $45 million here in the United States and going on to gobble up $530 million worldwide. It’s no surprise that Warner Bros. is back at it with Meg 2: The Trench, now playing in theaters worldwide.

How is the shark attack sequel performing at the box office? Meg 2: The Trench debuted to $30 million here in the United States over the weekend, $15 million less than the previous movie opened to back in 2018. But Warner Bros. is no doubt counting on Meg 2 making the bulk of its money internationally; worldwide, the film has already scared up $142 million.

A good chunk of that worldwide total so far is coming out of China.

Scott Mendelson notes, “The Meg 2 opened with $53 million in China, just above the $50 million debut of The Meg in 2018. It’s only the third Hollywood sequel to open above its respective franchise installment in China since 2019, alongside Avatar 2 and Godzilla Vs. Kong.”

Will Meg 2 reach the $530 million worldwide high of the first movie in the coming weeks? And will WB be ordering up another sequel anytime soon? We’ll be keeping a close eye…

The reported production budget for this year’s brand new sequel was $129-$139 million, a little bit less than the reported $130-$178 million production budget of the first one.

In Meg 2: The Trench, “A research team – including Jason Statham – encounters multiple threats while exploring the depths of the ocean, including a malevolent mining operation.”

Meg 2: The Trench is directed by Ben Wheatley (In the Earth, Free Fire), from a screenplay by Jon Hoeber & Erich Hoeber (The Meg, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts) and Dean Georgaris (The Meg, Lara Croft: Toom Raider – The Cradle of Life), and a screen story by Dean Georgaris and Jon Hoeber & Erich Hoeber, based on the novel The Trench by Steve Alten.

Officially the highest grossing film in the entire Insidious franchise, the Patrick Wilson-directed Insidious: The Red Door just passed another major milestone over the weekend.

The worldwide total for Insidious: The Red Door as of this writing is $182,430,087, which makes the franchise’s fifth installment the highest grossing horror movie of 2023 to date!

The previous worldwide record holder for the horror genre this year was Universal’s big time success M3GAN, which finished its run with $180 million earlier this year.

Other horror movies this year that have come close to Insidious: The Red Door‘s record-holding amount include Scream VI ($168.9 million) and Evil Dead Rise ($146.7 million).

In just its first few days of release, Meg 2: The Trench has already gobbled up $142 million worldwide, so it’s only a matter of time before it completely smashes down The Red Door.

But for now, the new Insidious movie holds the crown. Enjoy it, Lipstick Demon.

An unexpected surprise last week, Insidious: The Red Door is now available to purchase ($24.99) or rent ($19.99) on Digital platforms including Amazon and Vudu.

The horror franchise’s original cast is back in Insidious: The Red Door, directed by and starring Patrick Wilson. Family secrets will be revealed as the Lamberts head back into The Further one more time, encountering demons from the past as well as brand new terrors.

In the film, “To put their demons to rest once and for all, Josh (Patrick Wilson) and a college-aged Dalton (Ty Simpkins) must go deeper into The Further than ever before.”
